What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts that protrude through the gums are then attached to the implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

Dental Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Dental implants are the most comfortable and permanent tooth replacement solution. They form a strong foundation for teeth and keep the jaw healthy and strong. Implants support individual replacement teeth or secure specialized dentures in place. Unlike bridges, no healthy teeth are damaged. Unlike most bridges, implants can last a lifetime. Implant-supported replacement teeth can be attractive, stable, and comfortable for almost any patient.

Evaluation

If, like many others, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history. During these consultation visits, Dr. Colón, Dr. Guzmán, Dr. Zellner and Dr. Overfelt will address your specific needs and considerations. Your questions and concerns are important to our team and we will work with you very closely to help make your procedure a success.

We will also discuss fees and insurance at this time. There are many types of insurance plans, and coverage for implants is varied. We will be happy to assist you in obtaining any benefits to which you may be entitled.

What is Involved Dental Implant Procedure?

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. Healing time following surgery varies from person to person and is based on a variety of factors, such as the hardness of bone. In some cases, implants may be restored immediately after they are placed.

For the first three to six months following the surgery, dental implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet at this time. At the same time, your restorative dentist designs the final bridgework or denture that will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics. After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. Drs. Colón, Guzmán, Zellner and Overfelt will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar. After two weeks your general dentist will be able to start making your new teeth. An impression must be taken. Then posts or attachments can be connected to the implants.

The teeth replacements are then made over the posts or attachments. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.

What Types of Prosthesis are Available – Tallahassee, Crawfordville and Thomasville, GA?

A single prosthesis (crown) is used to replace one missing tooth – each prosthetic tooth attaches to its own implant. A partial prosthesis (fixed bridge) can replace two or more teeth and may require only two or three implants. A complete dental prosthesis (fixed bridge) replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. The number of implants varies depending upon which type of complete prosthesis (removable or fixed) is recommended. A removable prosthesis (over denture) attaches to a bar or ball in socket attachments, whereas a fixed prosthesis is permanent and removable only by a professional.

Our physicians perform in-office dental implant surgery in a hospital-style operating suite, thus optimizing the level of sterility. Inpatient hospital implant surgery is for patients who have special medical or anesthetic needs or for those who need extensive bone grafting from the jaw, hip or tibia.

Drs. Colón, Guzmán, Zellner and Overfelt have received extensive training in Dental Implantology. Through continuing education, we are abreast of the most current information on implant dentistry, such as TEETH-IN-AN-HOUR™.

Cee Cee earned my trust less than 10 mins in the examining room. She and I chatted like we've known each other for years. I felt so comfortable with her where I asked her will she be me through my journey she stated "I would love to" She made my first visit so relaxing. BUT THE ENTIRE STAFF OMG - MAKES YOU FEEL SO SPECIAL. Dr. Zellner was SO thorough. He explained my options and presented realistic outcomes. I learned so much in one visit because Dr. Zellner not only explain your options, he constantly ask you if you have any question while he is explaining. I am ready to be a walking testimony for how Periodontist Associates given me my smile and self confidence back while experiencing EXCELLENT CARE!!! THANK YOU ALL FOR EMBRACING ME WITH SO MUCH CARE AND ATTENTION. Cee Cee and Dr. Zellner KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK!!!!

Had an implant from Dr.Colon many years ago and is still great. Wife also had one and it’s perfect. Saw Dr. Guzman today and she was extremely thorough and explained my options. Getting another implant and would not go anywhere. The entire staff doesn’t do anything that isn’t first class.

Ever since my first cavity I harbored a morbid fear of dental procedures. My older brother and sister took great pains to fabricate horror tales far worse than those portrayed by Steve Martin in the Little Shop of Horrors. At the ripe age of 89 I decided that the potential medical benefits of a healthy mouth outweighed the financial and potentially painful cost. Besides, each day I thank the Lord for the blessing of life and want to slide into home plate in a blaze of glory rather than stumble into the abyss with a mouthful of rot and an infected heart. My expectations were partially fulfilled, in a nice way. Periodontal work is not cheap, but the artistry and skill of Dr. Colon as well as his excellent staff provided the extractions, bone grafting and implants in an almost pain free manner. The anesthetic fentanyl put me in LaLa land with no sign of any after effects. There was some minor pain and swelling but after the second day, aided by hydrocordone, the discomfort vanished. I am now ready for molding and tooth replacements so I can smile again without covering my mouth. My older brother and sister have both passed away, but I wish I could have told them the story of Dr. Colon.
